More than a third of Brits bank online

Wednesday 23rd May 2007

A decade after the advent of internet banking, a report from Nationwide shows that 37 per cent of British people now manage their money online.

Half of those who bank online said it was easy and 53 per cent said they found it convenient. One user in nine accesses internet banking as they can not always get to their local branch and one in 25 preferred the paperless process.

Over half of online bankers log on at least once a week and some 12 per cent of web users rely on the net to manage all their finances.

Although the vast majority of internet bankers use the service to manage their current account, 66 per cent also manage their savings account online and half use the web to manage their credit cards.

Sixty-nine per cent of people who refuse to bank online said they believed it was unsafe while one in four simply prefers to deal with real people.

"Internet banking has continued to be developed and enhanced over the last ten years and there is no doubt that it will attract more and more users," said Mik Hodsdon, divisional director at Nationwide.
