Phishing scams are on the rise and people need to know what to look out for, a spokesperson from the British Bankers' Association (BBA) has warned.
Online banking fraud has increased by nearly 45 per cent between 2005 and 2006, costing an estimated £33.5 million, according to figures from APACS, the UK's trade association for payments
Phishing scams have become far more frequent in recent months and often take the form of an e-mail, purporting to be from a person's bank and asking for personal details, or leading to website almost identical to that of their bank.
The BBA's spokesperson said: "It's fair to say that online identity fraud has increased greatly in the last few years. I can certainly say for sure that it's on the rise with the new technology, but also the more established forms of fraud haven't gone away either."
He advised people to be careful with their personal details and shred any documents. He added that when on the lookout for email or online phishing scams, it was important to remember that a "bank will never email you asking you for your personal details in that way".
