More cash machines in low-income areas

The government's plan to introduce more cash machines in low-income areas is making "substantial progress".Some 18 months after its launch, the joint initiative between the HM Treasury and the ATM working group has seen 419 new free cash machines installed.A further 143 locations have been identified, with new ATMs on these sites planned for the end of the year.Once these latest cash machines are installed there will be 563 free to use ATMs service 1.3 million Britons who previously had to travel out of their local area or pay charges to withdraw money.Economic secretary to the Treasury Kitty Ussher said: "This is real progress in our campaign for access to free cash machines in neighbourhoods up and down the country and a step forward for financial inclusion."When people have to pay to get their hands on their own money it excludes them from the financial system and these real costs are often borne by those who can least afford it."
