Gordon Brown faces grilling by senior MPs
The timing of Sir James Crosby's departure could not have been worse with Gordon Brown set to meet with the chairman of various House of Commons committees in his twice annual grilling. The subject of Sir James Crosby and the whistleblower from HBOS is splashed across the financial press today and is sure to be the focal point of what could be a very stormy debate.
During his time as Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown led something of a charmed life creating a reputation which was to go before him. However, after initially receiving praise from governments around the world for its handling of the ongoing recession, the last couple of weeks have seen a dramatic change in the perception of Gordon Brown and his supporters.
There are now serious concerns within the Labour Party that Gordon Brown is becoming something of a liability and while unlikely to experience a leadership challenge in the short term there are concerns about the next general election, expected in 2010. The grilling by the various committee chairman could cause serious damage to Mr Brown's reputation if he is not able to produce the answers which many people are looking for today.
