Anglo Irish Bank raided by fraud squad
The Irish government is already reeling from a significant protest by the Irish population last week, which was attended by more than 100,000 people, but tonight saw the fraud squad raid the offices of Anglo Irish Bank (which was recently nationalised by the government). It is rumoured the raid is in connection with allegations of loans between various financial institutions and loans allocated to certain individuals.
The allegations have literally blown apart the Irish financial sector with many banks on the verge of bankruptcy and in desperate need of government finance to see them through the ongoing downturn. While it is unlikely that the results of any fraud squad investigation will be made public in the short term, the ongoing confusion and concern can only do further harm to the Irish economy and the Irish financial sector. There are also fears that the fraud squad investigation could uncover more irregularities in the financial sector.
There are serious concerns with regards to the Irish economy in general as it does not appear to be responding to an array of rescue packages and substantial financial assistance by the Irish government. There is confusion as to what may happen next but there is every chance that the Irish government may require the assistance of third parties such as the International Monetary Fund or some form of European bailout.
