An independent financial advisor says it has proved that Brits will not take simple steps to improve their financial situation, after only a small number of people took up an offer of a free five pound note.
The test by moneysupermarket found that just 28 people took up the offer of the fiver when approached in busy shopping streets in Manchester and London.
A further study found that 53 per cent of Brits admitted they would not be eager to get their hands on the free cash should they come across the offer.
Tim Moss, head of loans and debt at moneysupermarket.com, commented: "People simply had to approach the sandwich board wearer and ask for a fiver.
He continued: "If more than 98 per cent of the people who passed by couldn't be bothered to do that, it raises some interesting questions about what needs to be done to persuade people to make an effort to improve their financial position."
One money saving tip from the firm is not to do any spending on any of the major balance transfer credit cards.
