Monday 8th February 2010
Despite apparently resolving issues regarding MPs expenses many months ago, the Houses of Parliament are still in disarray with four politicians set to be taken to court amid allegations of accounting fraud regarding their expenses. However, despite appointing various high-profile figures to check through expenses and collate potential reclaims the situation has now dragged on for far too long. There is a growing feeling amongst the UK public that many MPs would rather the expenses system was left to continue in its current form. While the initial surge of enthusiasm for change was welcomed by the UK public this is now nothing but a whimper in many areas of the political scene. It will be interesting to see whether these four prosecutions actually make it to court with rumours and counter rumours circulating on a daily basis. Even though there is a definite need for change in the Houses of Parliament there is some confusion and disagreement over what form it should take. Many MPs are pushing for an increase in their basic salary in exchange for giving up their expenses while others want to maintain the expenses system as it is today. Either way this will be a very difficult period for UK MPs as the public is still baying for blood!
