As the support for the Labour Party continues to haemorrhage it is no surprise to see the latest call for higher taxes for the rich. In a move of breath taking nerve, health minister Ivan Lewis has repeated the recent call for higher taxes for the rich in order to support those at the lower end of the income scale. It seems that Labour is looking to return to its core supporters and ditch the middle classes – at least until the next election.
Many ministers seems to be missing the fact that under Gordon Brown we saw the introduction of masses of so called stealth taxes – taxes on goods and services which consumers could not avoid – which hit the middle and higher income ends of the market hardest. Quite where the government thinks those in the firing line will be able to pull more money from remains to be seen as they have become, and continue to be, the highest taxed groups of the population in the UK.
The Labour Party seems very much to be having a crisis of identity and plucking crazy, headline grabbing ideas out of the air at an alarming rate. There is no way on earth that the richer elements of the UK would put up with higher taxes to cover the failings of the current government and why should they?
If this crazy suggestion is even given the slightest consideration we may see a substantial brain drain from the UK over the coming years with people unwilling to pay through the nose for ever and a day. |
