While it was a lucky escape for all passengers on board, the emergency landing experienced by passengers aboard a British Airways Boeing 777 at Heathrow earlier this year may have been caused by recent changes in flying regulations, aimed at helping the environment.
Even though the investigators into the crash – which saw the plane glide into land for the final minute of flying time – have not yet pinpointed why it happen, they now know that the fuel supply lines were blocked with ice. Many are now claiming that this was partly due to government regulations which now oblige planes to fly at higher altitude burning less fuel. A mixture of little movement in the fuel tanks and the sub-zero temperatures higher up in the atmosphere seem to have caused the problem.
A similar event occurred in Beijing over the last few weeks and there is now concern that changes need to be made as soon as possible to boost confidence. Pilots are now being advised to run their engines on a higher burn rate through the flight and try to cut down the length of time which they fly at higher than normal altitude.
This will turn environmental issues on their head but finally we are seeing normal everyday life regain its place in the pecking order. |
