‘Windfall tax not a deal breaker’

Sunday 7th September 2008

Gordon Brown must be a very relieved man today after he heard a number of his cabinet colleagues ‘call off the dogs’ in pursuit of the ever richer energy companies in the UK. There was widespread speculation that the PM faced a serious revolt from within the cabinet after refusing to introduce a windfall tax on the energy companies but the situation seems to have calmed – at least for the time being.

As we have covered to a great extent on this site, the real concern amongst the UK public is relaunch after relaunch after relaunch of Gordon Brown’s new ‘vision for the UK’. Stories have been deliberately planted in Labour friendly newspapers in order to catch the eye of the consumer with what turned out to be empty promises. After decaling war on the energy companies the PM has now decided to go with his cabinet colleagues Alistair Darling and John Hutton who had actually threatened to resign if the move went through – against some threatening to resign if the deal did not go ahead!

My Brown does not know which way to turn, he does not know who he can trust anymore and the pack seems to be forming behind him, ready to pounce when he is at his most vulnerable. Who would want to be the PM of the UK?
