SNP back track on plans for local income tax in Scotland

Monday 27th October 2008

Over the last few weeks the SNP has made more u-turns than a lost motorist as it battles to regain the upper ground after recent polls showed that Alex Salmond’s constant attempts at cheap points scoring have finally come back to haunt him. Love him or hate hit, Gordon Brown has stuck to his task of saving the economy while having to read snide and childish comments in the press from the Scottish leader.

This week also looks like being something of a watershed for the SNP’s current reign as they have laid the land for another u-turn on the local tax issue. Initially they were adamant that local councils would have no say in the matter but now they have said they will charge a 3p national rate but councils can reduce this if they so wish. The fact that councils will not reduce this is irrelevant but the fact the authorities have u-turned so sharply is the point.

In a blatant attempt to attack the middle classes in Scotland they have also reneged on a promise not to hit unearned income with this extra tax meaning that share dividends could come under the local tax scheme umbrella.

The SNP is the party of the people of Scotland. Comments against the SNP is a slur against the good people of Scotland. You seem to be taking a very political stand for a site that is for financial advise not on political comment. Under LIT most Scots will be better of. The SNP has made no u turns. Is the Labour party so desperate that they use any opportunity to put the people of Scotland. Under the SNP local council taxation has been frozen this year and next year, keep the costs of living down for everyone. Stop spreading Labour lies.
