How is the public sector workforce increasing?

It has been revealed today that there has been a significant rise in the number of council officers earning in excess of £50,000 a year throughout the UK. There has also been a significant rise in the number of local authority employees earning in excess of £100,000 a year. At a time when the rest of the economy is struggling how can it be that the public employee numbers continue to rise as do their wages?

There is serious concern that the public sector is being used as a convenient option to assist in the reduction of the unemployment numbers throughout the UK. Even just a few weeks ago we saw Gordon Brown suggesting that upwards of 100,000 public service jobs would be created, saved or protected over the coming months. Never in the history of the UK government have we seen such an increase in the number of public service employees than under the current Labour government. Not only has the led to a significant rise in wage costs but the final salary pension schemes attached to many local authorities have ballooned at the expense of the UK taxpayer.

It will be interesting to see how Gordon Brown responds to this new criticism which has been bubbling under the surface for some time.
