Police arrest five G20 demonstrators in terror probe

Just hours before the G20 Summit begins in London police have swooped on five alleged terrorists whom they believe were planning some form of attack on those attending the G20 Summit. The situation over the last few days has become critical for the Metropolitan police with all leave suspended and round-the-clock surveillance of would-be troublemakers and potential terror threats underway.

As the leaders of the world's most powerful governments get ready to meet up there are concerns that the event has attracted so many peaceful protesters that any terrorist or violent groups could well have significant cover as they move around. In many ways the outcome of the event is irrelevant to many who have been demonstrating over the last few days because the summit has something of a reputation as a "non-event".

As we have covered over the last few days, even Gordon Brown appears to have backtracked on his earlier promise of significant spending agreements to help try and refloat the worldwide economy. Those who are banking on the G20 Summit to bring about a significant recovery in the worldwide economy could well be disappointed.

Unless Gordon Brown is able to "pull a rabbit out of the hat" he may well suffer in the polls having built up the hopes of the UK population.
