Could anybody have done better than Gordon Brown in the economic crisis?
Despite the fact that Gordon Brown, after initially being hailed as a saviour, has come in for significant criticism with regards to his handling of the UK economic crisis, could anybody else have done any better?
Despite the likes of David Cameron and Menzies Campbell suggesting that Gordon Brown has made mistakes and effectively put the UK at risk of further recessionary pressure, he was placed in a situation which nobody had experienced before and nobody knew how to handle. Mistakes have been made, delays have been costly but ultimately whether you support Gordon Brown or not he has put his reputation on the line to try and save the UK economy, as well as his political skin.
In the hustle and bustle of yet another putdown, by an influential committee of MPs, it is easy to forget that many of Gordon Brown's revolutionary rescue packages were replicated around the world. After initially seeming to succeed, all of Gordon Brown's supporters suddenly turned against him when the going got tough, placing perhaps unfair and undue pressure on the Prime Minister.
The truth is that we will never know whether the likes of David Cameron and Menzies Campbell for example could have done any better but it does seem as though the recession and general handling of the UK economy will cost Gordon Brown his place at number 10 next year.
