UK government set to release Lockerbie bomber correspondence
The UK government and its Scottish counterpart are set to release copies of correspondence between the two regarding al-Megrahi as pressure on the UK authorities continue to grow. There is a feeling, and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw did nothing to allay these fears, that the UK government was railroaded into discussing a possible transfer of the Lockerbie bomb from Scotland to Libya some months ago, in exchange for trade deals. However, even though the UK authorities have agreed to release documentation regarding correspondence between London and Scotland, much of this particular documentation is already in the public domain.
The Scottish economy has already suffered a serious backlash from the ongoing issue with the US government and US consumers. Websites have been set up in America purely and simply to advise Americans to boycott Scottish goods at a time when the Scottish economy is struggling and needs all the help it can get. There are also reports of tourists cancelling bookings across Scotland with many hotels starting to feel the backlash.
It is hoped that the UK authorities and the Scottish executive will be able to kill this particular issue stone dead this week and hopefully allow the Scottish executive to concentrate on rebuilding US relationships.
