Prospering in a recession
Matt Brittin, the UK managing director of Google, has confirmed the thoughts of many entrepreneurs with his view that the Internet has allowed many "inventive" entrepreneurs to prosper during the ongoing recession. There is no doubt that the ability to seek out and target niche markets has proved very lucrative even in this most difficult of trading periods and more and more business people are moving online to chase their future.
It is the significant reduction in setup costs and running costs which has seen many people look towards the Internet to replace their businesses and introduce new operations. While it would be wrong to suggest there is no competition on the Internet, in many ways the Internet is more competitive than the open marketplace, but it is the size of the market which is the major difference. As a consequence, rather than finding a niche market in your home country, it is now possible to find a niche market in the worldwide market and even if the "big players" are present in that market there will be gaps for those inventive enough with their marketing ploys.
The Internet is here to stay both in our everyday lives, and business lives, and the quicker we all learn to accept it the better.
