Vauxhall to limit job losses in exchange for help

The head of Vauxhall UK has indicated the company is willing to agree to reduce job losses at its UK operations in exchange for significant taxpayer loans and guarantees provided by the government. There is talk of "only" 800 job losses in the UK although how much the company is looking for in assistance from the UK government is currently unclear.

However, as we approach a very critical period of the political calendar there is no doubt that the UK government will be keen to see as many jobs saved as possible even if this means investing significant taxpayer money. The situation has been clouded in mystery for some time since the sale of GM Europe was cancelled and the group was brought back into the General Motors fold. It will be interesting to see how the negotiations progress as GM Europe has proved over the last few weeks it is willing to talk but has taken a very strong line during negotiations.

The UK car manufacturing sector has been decimated over the last 20 or 30 years and the withdrawal of Vauxhall UK would be a bitter pill to swallow. There is no way that the government can afford to let Vauxhall UK downsize or indeed withdraw from the UK.
