Alistair Darling attacks Scottish government |

Sunday 17th January 2010
In a sign that the Labour Party is now looking to firm up support in Scotland, Alistair Darling has today gone on the attack with a suggestion that the SNP- Lib Dem coalition has lost control of Edinburgh. This is the first time we have seen such a prominent UK MP openly attack the SNP and the policies which it has introduced since it took power. Those who follow the Scottish political scene will be well aware that the SNP has highlighted and then drop a number of major policies, continues to push for independence and seems determined to battle with the UK government at every opportunity. Each and every funding issue is laid fairly and squarely at the door of the UK government which has not helped relations with those North of the border. Indeed support for the SNP has fallen away dramatically over the last few months with many Scottish voters unimpressed at the fact that Alex Salmond continues to push for independence while the Scottish economy has been highlighted as the weakest in the UK. It seems highly likely that the Labour Party will continue to attack the SNP in the run-up to the election and with the Conservative party unlikely to direct resources in this direction, the Labour Party has a clear road to attack the SNP.

Support for SNP hasn't "fallen away "dramatically" though. SNP still lead in the polls. The latest YouGov released today says support for SNP has increased, whilst Labour has fallen.

Am I the only one who finds the anti-SNP rants in this web site tedious in the extreme.
The NATS lead in todays polls as Bob says, there is NOT a SNP/LIB coalition in Edinburgh but a pretty successful minority Government.
In economic terms the latest Scottish job figures show employment rising and unemployment falling.- unlike the rest of the UK. And even if these things weren't true why would anyone take any lessons on anything economic from Alistair "180 billion defecit" Darling.
Can I suggest to the journo - learn something about Scotland or just stop writing - it makes the whole site a laughing stock.

Bob, you will find that was a poll sponsored by the SNP which was released as part of the SNP's usual propaganda machine as a Press Release on to Google News. It's baloney.
Support for the SNP is well down. The vote in Glasgow North East was close to the reality of the 1980's. The SNP's failure to deliver on key election pledges will be damning in the Scottish Parliament election of 2011, but the general election of 2010 will be between the Labour and the Tories.

Alex Anderson, learn something about Edinbrugh there is indeed a coalition between the SNP and the Liberals and they are pretty duff. Your erronous comment and general ignorance of local government suggests strongly that you are not in the slightest bit Scottish or actually in Scotland.
