Use protection, urged CIFAS

Monday 8th October 2007

To coincide with the UK's third annual National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service, is urging consumers to use protection to prevent themselves from becoming victims.

According to the Home Office, identity fraud is costing a shocking £1.7 billion every year, but many people are ignoring the risks, with recent research showing that as many as 80 per cent of households throw out personal information that could allow fraudsters to steal their identity.

Peter Hurst, chief executive of CIFAS said: "No-one should be complacent about identity fraud. The effect on victims can be devastating. Where a victim's identity has been seriously compromised, it can take years to untangle the threads of deception.

"Even where it is possible to rectify matters quickly, the psychological damage caused by such frauds can cast a long shadow."

He urged people to remember the acronym PROTECTION, to help cut their risk of becoming victims of identity fraud.
