Public transport delays hitting UK businesses

Thursday 21st February 2008

Delays caused to worker's commutes by public transport are costing UK businesses millions of pounds every month, it has been revealed.

A poll conducted by Abbey Business Banking found that the average commuter loses 36 minutes of their time at work every week as a result of delays in getting to their place of employment.

The building society calculates that the loss to productivity that results from this is costing British industry £212 per month.

Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey’s Business Banking, said that the delays hit small to medium enterprises (SMEs) especially hard.

He commented: "The inconvenience pubic transport delays is one most of us have experienced but often the impact on our working day is often overlooked, not to mention the cost to our employer.

"The smaller the business the greater the burden of staff lateness so the onus really is on the individual to build in enough time not to leave colleagues and bosses in the lurch."

Abbey's research also discovered that people in the South East are most likely to rely on public transport, while Midlands residents are most likely to travel to work by independent means.
