The headlines across all of the newspapers today are concentrating on what many see as an inevitable leadership challenge for Gordon Brown after the disastrous Glasgow East by-election. To put the set-back into context this is a seat which Labour has held for over 100 years in some shape or form, this was also the 25th ‘safest seat’ on the Labour hit list and one which not even the SNP thought they could win until a few days ago. So what does this mean for Gordon Brown?
While there are many reasons why the Labour Party, in particularly Gordon Brown, is under so much pressure, the rising taxes in the UK and the rising cost of living are the two which spring to mind. Despite repeated claims that the Party is ‘listening’ it has yet to make any material difference to the plight of the UK population, many of whom are at risk of losing their homes and jobs in the short to medium term.
Gordon Brown made his name as Chancellor and there is a growing feeling that he should maybe have retained that role and the step to PM was just one step too far. |
