Those with even the remotest interest in sport will be well aware that the UK Olympic Team (aka Team GB) is performing above expectations in the Olympic Games and should come back with our biggest ever haul of medals. As the feel good factor grips the nation is this the turning point we need to push start the economy again? Will this be enough to get us out onto the high street spending again?
There is no doubt that events such as the Olympics do catch the eye of nations around the world and there is a feel good factor when home grown athletes perform well. However, we are in such a difficult situation in the UK that we may well only see a short term lift from Team GB when they come home. Then again maybe we should be happy to have some short term relief form what is fast become a lurch into recession?
While the Olympic Games is a well respected event, history will show that it is the Football World Cup which can really put a smile on the UK public’s faces. That said, while football is our national sport (no disrespect to athletes at the games) the better Team GB do the greater the lift, however short term that may be. |
