Market Traders Told To Button It

Tuesday 19th August 2008

Market traders in the picturesque town of Hexham in Northumberland have been warned to ‘keep the noise down’ after a number of local companies complained that market stall traders were too loud. The move has been met with amazement by stallholders who have been selling their wares since the early 13th century.

While Tynedale Council has taken the complaints serious enough to approach a number of stall holders directly they have also issued a blanket warning to all market stalls. Traders are now concerned that centuries old traditions are under threat as well as the fact they depend on their sales ‘patter’ to tempt in the many visitors to the town. When you consider that there are six market days a week the competition for business is substantial.

On wider note many lovers of the traditional markets believe that this is just the thin end of the wedge and another crazy attempt to dumb down some of the oldest traditions in the retail sector. Now that Tynedale Council has put in place a formal warning it seems that a number of other councils around the UK could follow suit. Whatever is the world coming to?
