Has the nationalisation of RBS and HBOS scuppered Scottish independence?

It has been one of the hot topics in Scotland but the nationalisation of RBS and HBOS seems to have dealt something of a bitter blow to the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP). Despite a number of comments to the contrary today it seems that until RBS and HBOS are back in public control there is no way that independence can be implemented - a key element of their manifesto going forward.

Many also claim that the move has highlighted the fact that the Scottish government as a separate entity would not have been able to raise the massive finances which have been brought to the table by the UK authorities. This also comes at a time when Alex Salmond is asking parliament for in excess of £1 billion to assist with the Scottish economy although many believe that he is just spinning sound bites for the press.

It has been noticeable that despite the Scottish government trying to push itself into the talks about the financial bailout there has been very little coverage of their plight. Even the Scottish newspapers are more interested in the financial bailout than the SNP agenda at the moment - it certainly looks as though the SNP honeymoon with the Scottish press is over.
