Is the UK set to join the euro?

While the economic headlines are centring upon the performance and potential for the UK economy there seems to be an underlying move towards the euro, in direct contravention of the majority of the UK population's thoughts. This situation appears set to take on a mind of its own with suggestions from within the European Parliament that the UK is already making plans to join up to the euro in the short to medium term.

The introduction of Lord Mandelson to the government has further strengthened the argument that behind the scenes moves are taking place, as he is known to be a keen supporter of a Central European currency. However, surely Gordon Brown would not be willing to take the chance ahead of the next general election as this would draw attention to the non-referendum on the revised "European treaty" which came into place last year.

Quite why the European Parliament and indeed the UK government has chosen this time to even contemplate a possible move to the euro remains to be seen, although noises from within Europe suggest the UK government believes the economy would have been better served playing a more central part in the European economy.
