Is Alistair Darling on the way out?

The chancellor Alistair Darling has been fairly quiet of late with Gordon Brown taking centre stage yet again on the domestic and international front. There is speculation that the Chancellor and the Prime Minister have had another serious fallout regarding the UK economy and how to use taxpayers money to fund a recovery. This is not the first time they have disagreed strongly on the future direction of the UK economy and UK rescue packages but each argument appears to weaken the position of Alistair Darling.

This is in direct contrast to Gordon Brown's time in office at the Treasury where he ran his own kingdom and effectively shut out Tony Blair from his major decisions. It would appear that Gordon Brown wants to rule both the Treasury and the government but whether this is possible remains to be seen. The questioning of Alistair Darling's recent forecast for the UK economy, by the Bank of England, could well be the final nail in his coffin and see him either moved out of government altogether or sidestepped into another department.

After a fairly quiet start to his time in the Treasury, Alistair Darling is considered in many quarters as a puppet for Gordon Brown although it would appear that he has had enough of this image.
