Jacqui Smith under serious pressure as heat turned up
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is this evening sitting on the verge of resigning from her role as Home Secretary. She has become embroiled in a bitter battle of wills with regards to the lucrative expenses claimed by MPs throughout the UK. While already under investigation by the Commons standards committee, regarding her second home allowance, she has now become the subject of a detailed leak from Parliamentary sources.
As we approach the release of literally millions upon millions of MPs expense claims it has been revealed that Jacqui Smith has over the last few years claimed everything from a kitchen sink to 2 washing machines as well as an 88p plug for her "second home". The fact that her second home is the place where her husband and children live has called into question the future of the expenses system.
While Jacqui Smith will be hitting the headlines today, tomorrow and probably for some time yet, she is not the only MP who has claimed significant expenses from the UK taxpayer. It looks as though, if Gordon Brown is good to his word, that the gravy train of UK politics will soon be coming to a halt - not before time!
