DIY can be very cost-effective but.....
DIY is a pastime which is very common and very popular across the UK and while it can lead to significant cost savings and potential investment returns for those willing to take on DIY there are also opportunities to fall into very simple traps which could in the long-term cost you money. If you know what you're doing with regards to DIY around the home then by all means try to save yourself money doing simple jobs which would cost potentially hundreds of pounds if carried out by a qualified electrician, joiner, etc.
However if you are not an experienced electrician or joiner then why would you even contemplate attempting DIY in these areas?
It is easy to forget that simple mistake with your electrical wiring could have serious implications for safety and also serious implications for your pocket. Hiring an electrician to sort out any potential problems you may have caused could end up being substantially more expensive than the original DIY issue itself. You need to be confident, experienced and willing to learn but also to know the limits of your ability.
It is interesting that DIY is so popular across the UK but we rarely ever hear of the other side of the coin where people make significant and costly mistakes which can have harrowing consequences.
