Is Amazon looking to move off-line?
Amazon, the world's largest virtual shopping venture, is rumoured to be looking at potential high street venues for the future. Despite the fact that these claims have been denied by the company, it is believed that Amazon has been looking at acquiring property around the UK with rumours that a separate outfit could be created allowing customers to "click and buy" larger products such as TVs and furniture. This would indeed be a very severe U-turn by Amazon, which has the largest shopping based warehouse in the world, although it is unclear as yet whether this is accurate information.
The emergence of Amazon on the UK high street, as well as dominating the online market, would be a major blow to the UK retail market and would likely place significant pressure on profit margins in the short, medium and longer term. However, whether the Amazon brand is transferable from cyberspace to the real world remains to be seen, although when you consider the market exposure and the market share which the company boasts at the moment it would appear that UK retailers should be wary.
Today has been dubbed "cyber Monday" with expectations high with regards to retail spending for Christmas, with some experts believing upwards of £400 million will be spent online today.
