Money really can buy you love and it does not come cheap either, according to the results of a new survey by Abbey.
Research found that over three quarters of a million people had split up with someone because they did not spend enough money on them and another 18 per cent, the equivalent to 5.9 million people nationwide, said that their partners did not splash out enough on them.
Birthday and Christmas presents were among the obvious things to spend on - the average spent on birthday gifts £95, Christmas costs around £133 and £97 goes on other gifts throughout the year - but spending on dates also stood to make a dent in the wallet, costing over £1,200 a year.
Currently the average Brit spends £1,569 per year on their partner, although men were found to spend a little more than women and the amount spent tended to increase with age, but as the poll showed, this is just not enough for many of us.
Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey, said: "Love doesn't come cheap. It costs over £1,500 a year to be in a relationship and love keeps on getting more expensive as you get older."
