Millions switch energy supplier
As many as 2.8 million households changed their electricity or gas supplier in the first seven months of 2007 alone, the energy regulator Ofgem has reported. Now, around half of all households in the UK are thought to have switched their gas or electricity supplier at some point since 1998, with four million switching in 2006 alone Ofgem said that the figures were evidence of the success of the deregulation the domestic energy market. "Now is a good time for all customers to check whether they are getting a good deal for their energy," said Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan. He added: "This is particularly true for pre-payment meter customers, who can reap savings on average of £100 if they have never switched supplier."According to the regulator, in some parts of the country, pre-payment customers stand to save as much as £170 a year if they shop around for the best energy supplier, compared with average savings of £60 to £86 a year for ordinary customers.
