Fear stops people switching, says UKPower.co.uk
Fear of the unknown is stopping many householders from shopping around for better deals on their utility bills and changing their supplier, according to a spokesperson for UKPower.co.uk, an online utility price comparison site.According to industry regulator Ofgem, some 2.8 million households switched their electricity supplier within the first seven months of 2007 and a further 2.3 million changed to a different gas supplier. However, despite the large number of people who are switching, according to Graham Self, director of UKPower.co.uk, there is an amount of "naivety" surrounding the process. "I think there is an element of the unknown," he said, adding: "Some people don't know what is involved, they wonder if they are going to have to have someone come round to their house to change pipes and wires."He went on to say that making moves to try and cut electricity and gas consumption could also reduce bills, adding that it was surprising how much money could be saved by doing little things like turning off lights and not leaving appliances on standby.
