Virgin: Footy fans spend big on support

Wednesday 5th March 2008

Football fans spent over £1,000 on following their team last year, Virgin Money has revealed.

According to the firm, Premiership supporters spent an average £1,331 on tickets and merchandise - with fans of lower-league teams just behind on £1,080.

Virgin Money also found that the ticket expenditure of 12 per cent of top division match-going supporters exceeded £3,000 last year.

In total, the football-related spend stood at five per cent of the average British income for each fan.

Virgin Money spokesman John Franklin said: "2008 will be a real struggle for football fans, regardless of the team they support: while it's true that some clubs have made efforts to reduce ticket prices in an effort to attract more people to match days, the majority of regular football fans will be hard hit by the cost of going to games.

"And while 2007 saw some tough financial conditions, the outlook for 2008 is potentially even worse, meaning people’s expenditure on football will eat into their disposable income even further."
