Regional pricing for gas means higher bills

The location of your home is becoming increasingly likely to determine how much your pay for your gas and electricity, it has been revealed. Prices for electricity are currently determined by the cost of delivering the power to the location in question. Recently this system has been adopted by companies, including npower, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy, to set gas prices, with the effect of pushing up prices for some customers, with many now facing annual bills of over £1,000. However, affected consumers can minimise the impact of the adoption of the system of regional pricing by shopping around to find a cheaper provider, according to Siobhan Parker of Switch with Which? She said: "The adoption of regional gas prices by some suppliers further emphasises price variations around the country. npower has announced an average gas increase of 12.8 per cent, but customers living in regions such as London and the East Midlands are being hit with a much bigger price rise of 23.8 per cent."People must vote with their feet and seek out the best deal to combat the effects of what is ultimately a postcode lottery."
