Thursday 20th March 2008
Energy prices for 8.5 million customers of Scottish & Southern Energy are set to rise as of April, it has been announced.
The company has confirmed that its gas and electricity tariffs are to be hiked by 15.8 per cent and 14.2 per cent respectively.
Rising wholesale energy costs were cited as justification for the move, with the company drawing attention to a 90 per cent increase for gas and a 100 per cent rise for electricity since March last year.
Alistair Phillips-Davies, energy supply director of Scottish & Southern, said: "Energy supply in the UK is changing dramatically, with companies having to operate in volatile markets, which reflect depletion of North Sea oil and gas fields, soaring global demand for all types of energy and over $100 a barrel for oil.
"These pressures are compounded by the rising transmission, distribution and environmental costs, which suppliers have to meet.
"You cannot resist indefinitely the impact of these issues and I am sorry that all of this has culminated in the price rises we are announcing."
Since the start of the year all of the UK's big six energy providers have announced double-digit increases to their tariffs.
