Which? responds to Ofgem switching figures

Thursday 3rd April 2008

Which? has responded to figures showing that the number of consumers switching energy provider last year hit a five-year high.

Research conducted by the UK energy watchdog Ofgem found that the number of switchers in 2007 climbed to 5.1 million.

Siobhan Parker of Switch with Which? welcomed the trend which she said is evidenc that "consumers are using their buying power and taking their business elsewhere if they're not on the best tariff".

However, millions of consumers are still failing to shop around for the best deal, she claims, citing as proof that fact "about 50 per cent of UK households have never switched provider".

Ofgem's figures come as energy companies have imposed across the board double digit price increases to gas and electricity tariffs - a move that provoked strong criticism from consumer groups.

Yesterday, Ofgem launched a pilot campaign called Energy Best Deal in conjunction with Citizens Advice to promote switching among low income groups.
