Family food bills have skyrocketed over the last 12 months in the face of shortages of basic agricultural goods, it has been revealed.
MySupermarket.com studied the prices of core foodstuffs from the three major food retailers and found that the average family food bill has surged by £800 in the last year.
Over this period the price of six pints of semi-skimmed milk has increased by 28p at Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's.
Meanwhile, a dozen free range eggs are now 50 per cent more expensive at the same stores.
Johnny Stern, managing director of MySupermarket.co.uk, said: "The conclusion is that supermarkets are passing on a sizeable amount of the increased costs.
"The average customer cares about the products they need to put in their basket every week that they don't have any choice about."
The growing tendency for farmers to use fields to grow crops for biofuels has been cited as a contributory factor towards shortages in the food supply chain.
