London Lorry Protest Picks Up Support

The ongoing protest by lorry drivers has brought much of London to a standstill with the public firmly behind the show of support against the ever increasing cost of motoring. While the protestors have been kept well away from Downing Street to reduce the chances of embarrassing photographs in the newspapers, the campaign seems to be gathering much momentum.

The ongoing attack on motorists has seen many people consider dumping their cars and more and more lorry drivers forced out of business. While the authorities are blaming the rise in the price of oil, the fact is that the rise has seen a £1 billion bonus for the Treasury in fuel tax duty. Many consumer and business groups are complaining that this more than makes up for the expected rise later this year, and gives the government the chance of reducing the cost of fuel.

The problem the Treasury has is the terrible state of the budget deficit and the growing national debt which has been used to try and ride out the economic turmoil across country. Quite simply, if the government perform yet another u-turn on fuel tax they will need to perform a smash and grab elsewhere to make up the short fall - a nightmare scenario for any government.
