The Secret Chip Fat Fuel Phenomenon
While the company has been going for some time, the national media have only just picked up on a small garage in York which has hit on a goldmine selling used chip fat oil as biofuel. While the fuel is only applicable to diesel vehicles the company has seen demand go through the roof over the last few weeks and is struggling to fulfil demand. The fuel is priced at just under 95p a litre, a substantial discount on more traditional fuels, and feedback with regards to vehicle performance has been very good.
The garage has never actively promoted the fuel, preferring to depend on word of mouth to keep the supply and demand balanced, but word seems to have leaked out over the last few weeks. No longer able to keep up with demand the garage is now open only 2 or 3 days a week as oppose to the 5 day week of more recent times.
However, this is no short term gimmick, no tax dodge, this is a new line of fuel which many of the larger companies are starting to consider. As you might guess the Treasury still take their slice of the price, around about 30p a litre, and while supply is fairly low at about 60,000 litres a month it shows the potential for the fuel. When you consider that the company collect the used chip fat from local companies and do not pay for the ‘waste’, can there be a more efficient business model in the land?
