Government announces new fuel measures

Monday 2nd June 2008

The government has announced a series of measures designed to help vulnerable and less wealthy people with their fuel bills.

Changes to the law will be sought, to allow the sharing of data with energy suppliers and a pilot scheme involving 3,000 households will oblige firms to give customers applying for Warm Front grants advice on how to make the maximum savings.

A £3 million microgeneration project will be introduced in an attempt to help fuel poor communities as part of the government's low carbon buildings programme.

Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks commented: "We've got a commitment from the energy companies now to provide an extra £225 million in social assistance by increasing their investment to £150 million per year by 2011.

"Now we're working on finding ways to get them the right information to enable them to get that money to those who need it the most."

There is also due to be a formal consultation on the Heat Strategy in Autumn.
