UK Digital Switch Set To Move Closer
As the cost of converting the UK’s radio and TV stations from analogue to digital continues to rise there are renewed calls for the full switch to be brought forward to 2020 at the latest and 2015 if possible. A working party representing the media and those who will be involved in the switch over has highlighted the fact that costs are creeping higher and digital radio and TV companies are struggling to obtain reasonable investment returns because the vast majority of the market has yet to switch over.
The digital TV switch began in the Lake District earlier this year and while more moves are planned in the immediate future, there are concerns that the pace is too slow. Only by increasing the take-up of digital services can manufacturers and broadcasters create the cash flows required to invest back into products and services. Money is still very tight in the corporate market and without the necessary investment returns available at the moment it is proving ever more difficult to justify substantial investment.
The move from analogue to digital will definetely go ahead but there is growing pressure on the authorities to bring forward previously agreed switch dates.
