Council Tax Down As Police Pay The Price

Thursday 26th June 2008

In a sign of things to come the government has confirmed that Council tax bills in Lincolnshire are set to fall this year after the police force budget was capped. The police force in the county current has a £6 million deficit and there were calls for a near 80% increase in funding to cover the shortfall. The government has announced they will only fund a 26% increase which will mean a fall of around £100 a year in council tax bills.

While this is not the first time that increased budget requests have been turned down, it is the first time it has had a real impact upon local council taxes. At a time when the cost of living continues to rise there are real hopes that we may be at a turning point for the council tax system. A number of changes over the years have seen bills constantly rise with many people struggling to cover the amounts in question.

It will be interesting to see if this trend is replicated around the country and whether there are any reductions in the quality of local services. Finally it seems that years of over spending and increased council taxes may be coming to an end.
