Rebel MPs Set To Take On The Chancellor Again

If rumours in the Commons are correct it seems that the Chancellor Alistair Darling may soon be on the end of another MPs revolt, this time over the proposed hike in car tax. This is an issue which will just not die and again has the potential to instigate a serious revolt against the government. The main crux of the issue seems to be the governments insistence that the tax will be backdated – in the face of earlier indications that the Treasury gave to motorists.

There are concerns that yet again the motorist is set to bear the brunt of the governments smash and grab taxation policies as they try to reduce the budget deficit by whatever means possible. While officially the government are claiming that only larger cars will be hit with higher taxes, unofficial numbers suggest that over 1 million drivers will be hit with bills approaching nearly £200 a year more than they are paying now.

Initially seen as a tax against the rich, it seems that the structure is such that nearly all divers will be hit with a rise, the amount of which will depend on the age of the car they drive.
