Aldi Takes On The Major Supermarkets

Sunday 29th June 2008

In a move which is seen by many as the first real threat to the main four supermarkets in the UK, discount chain Aldi has announced plans to open a new store in the UK each week for the next five years. The cost of this move is around the £1.5 billion mark but news that the group has seen a record 20% growth in sales over the last month bodes well for the future.

It is interesting to see that at the same time as the Aldi plans are announced , the likes of Tesco and ASDA have entered the discount food market with their own brand range with goods as low as 50p. Did they have an idea that Aldi was looking to attack their markets or have they just decided that the best way to keep customers is to tempt them in with discount offers?

While Aldi would not dare to go for the higher premium foods sold in Tesco and ASDA there are some analysts a little surprised that the big two have affectively declared war on the likes of Aldi. If people want discount food the go to Aldi, but if the may be want a greater range to choose from they would more likely go to Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury or Morrisons. Is this a risky game the big two are playing?
