Debt fears and a budgetary squeeze are causing many low-income Britons to go without food, it has been suggested.
A joint survey from charity NCH and Barclays, released today, shows that one in five of the poorest UK residents skip meals due to not being able to afford food.
Moreover, the study found that 57 per cent of the group find it more of a struggle to afford meals than they did a year ago - and that around 12 per cent have "gone hungry" over the past 12 months due to the money worries.
Poor management of personal finances, along with rising food prices. was blamed by the pollsters for the research's results.
Commenting on the findings, NCH chief executive Clare Tickell said: "There's no doubt that everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment and that those on the lowest incomes are suffering the most.
"But once you get behind the headlines it's not all doom and gloom. It is obvious through our work with families and young people that basic money management advice can help people cut down on their weekly grocery bills and make their food and finances go further."
