Its A Dogs Life In The Recession

Saturday 12th July 2008

As sad as it sounds there has been a massive increase in the number of people abandoning their pets due to a lack of funds available to feed and look after them. Animal charities around the UK have confirmed a large jump in the number of abandoned pets with figures rising from 5,000 in 2005 to 11,000 in 2007, and 2008 is expected to move substantially higher. With 43% of UK homes owning at least one pet, there are literally millions of pets at risk!

Before those who abandoned their pets are hung, drawn and quartered there are a number of issues to consider. Many people have actively been trying to find new homes for their pets but new owners are thin on the ground and many pet sanctuaries are full. However, perhaps the main reason for the rise is the number of house repossessions in the UK and families being moved into rented accommodation.

Very often landlords of rented accommodation will not allow pets in their properties, leaving many pet owners with a heartbreaking decision which is affectively out of their control. It cannot be easy being thrown out of your own home and having to leave you family friend behind, well that just makes it worse.
