Duty Freeze Seen As A Political Stunt

News that Gordon Brown has finally succumb to pressure regarding the freezing of the forthcoming 2p tax hike on petrol has caused uproar on the opposition benches with claims of a political manoeuvre ahead of the Glasgow East by-election. Yet again, given the chance to give the public what they have been crying out for, the government has gone about things the wrong way and ended up with egg on their face.

Now that the government has avoided an immediate backbench revolt it seems that we may well be able to get on with business as usual, but that may not be so. There is a growing clamour for future cuts in the rate of tax on fuel as a way to prevent the UK commercial transport network from literally grinding to a halt. New noises from the ground indicate that this is still not enough to prevent further demonstrations with many protestors smelling blood and looking to go for the jugular.

Each and every u-turn which the government has performed has been for political reasons rather than gestures of good will for the UK population. However much they wrap up the presents, the public feel more and more like they are being given back something which was already theirs in the first place.
