Is ASDA Closing The Gap On Tesco?
While the price of a weekly shop continues to climb higher and higher we are seeing the makings of what could turnout to be a brutal turf war between ASDA and number one in the sector, Tesco. ASDA has just reported like for like sales growth of 5.5% for the last 3 months something which seems to be going against the trend in the sector. So is ASDA closing the gap? Is Tesco losing the golden touch?
Everything which Tesco has touched over the last decade has turned into gold and it is a little soon to suggest that they will soon be knocked off the top spot. The fact is that whether by cleverer marketing or better pricing, the group has constantly knocked the spots off all other competitors except ASDA.
While ASDA is not yet in a position to challenge for the top spot it has to be said that any battle between the big two would assist the consumer greatly. It is also worth noting that the leaders in the sector have ridiculed a report which suggested that food inflation was currently running in excess of 13%. However there is no doubt that the price of food has raced ahead by more than general inflation but competition should see prices stabilise at worst and hopefully drop back!
