The great energy voucher trick
When will the government ever learn? We see them in the press suggesting that things are afoot to take the pressure of those in most need, but then silence.
The latest scheme to hit the skids is the much vaunted energy payment voucher which was supposed to see those at the bottom end of the income scale receive a £100 money off voucher against their energy costs. While this is only a fraction of the rise in energy costs over the last year it was going to be well received by those in most need. So just when he seems to be steadying the ship, what does Gordon Brown do?
Gordon Brown has confirmed that there will be no 'short term gimmicks' such as an energy bill voucher which roughly translated means that the government is so weak that the foreign owned energy companies were able to resist the call for help. This comes at a time when it is reported that shareholders in these energy companies have seen dividends rise by over 20% which equates to an extra £250 million.
If the government was not able to turn that argument around and push home calls for help for the needy then they really are in big trouble.
