Brown announces new energy plan
A new £910 million energy plan was unveiled today by prime minister Gordon Brown.Included in the new initiatives is payments for pensioners and young families to meet costs for heating if the weather gets very cold this winter.As part of its long-standing policy of improving energy efficiency to bring bills down, home insulation installation is also to be discounted by 50 per cent.Moreover, cavity wall and loft insulation is to be made free of charge for low-income households.The government released its plan following consultation with Britain's gas and electricity providers.Mr Brown said: "This is the right approach, giving priority to permanent - not just one-off - changes, with the offer of lasting benefits and fairness for all families, cutting bills permanently every year."Gas and electricity bills have gone up by 40 per cent for some customers over the past year.
